Forty Chi Phi Brother and friends converged on the pristine Ritz-Carlton Golf Club Grande Lakes in Orlando, Florida on Thursday, June 23, 2011, for the Watts Gunn Memorial Golf Tournament. The event raised $30,000 for Chi Phi’s Total Membership Education program.
With an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start, ten teams started early to try and beat the Florida heat. The morning started with several friendly, but fierce, battles among players. The Grand Council team went head-to-head against the Educational Trust team, and the Nu Delta team did their best to outperform the men from Delta Theta. Not to be outdone by Alumni, two student Men of 1824 teams, Omega Zeta and Epsilon Delta battled back to within a few strokes of the lead. A few difficult holes in the back nine would have been a challenge to Watts Gunn himself and seemed to be the difference in the tournament.
In the end, the Clemson Tiger foursome of Kirk Thomas, Delta Theta 2005, Chris Waters, Delta Theta 2004, Christian Danuser, Delta Theta 2005 and Steven Prokupek, Delta Theta 2008, brought home the title with a score of 12 under par. The Florida State Seminoles from Nu Delta came in a close second with a score of 13 under from team members Nick Abrahams, Nu Delta 2010, Mike Molter, Nu Delta 2012, Blake Cochran, Nu Delta 2012, and Stuart Santos, Nu Delta 2009.
While the skill level varied among competitors, two individual golfers stood out from the crowd. Senour Reed, Eta 1979, won the closest to the pin contest, and Grand Alpha Jim Soderquist, Alpha 1967, won the longest drive contest.
The tournament wasn’t just about fun and camaraderie. Thanks to twelve corporate sponsors and the 40 players, the event added $30,000 to fund Chi Phi’s leadership development programs.
Educational Trust Chairman and tournament organizer, Chris Shuler, Alpha Zeta 1984, was excited about the tournament participation. “It’s great to see so many Chi Phi students, Alumni and friends make a commitment to build better men. This event lets us have fun, create memories and provide for our future. I am already looking forward to the 2012 Watts Gunn Tournament!”
